Background

With 17,000 employees across multiple UK sites, Bakkavor is the UK’s leading fresh prepared food manufacturer with a mission to offer great tasting and convenient food to people around the world.

Bakkavor is committed to the health and wellbeing of its employees. With a wide range of manual handling tasks, repetitive activities and sustained postures, the risk of Musculo-skeletal disorders in manufacturing are high and absence data from Bakkavor’s manufacturing site at Holbeach demonstrated that absence due to back pain was an issue, with 286 days lost on average every month to MSK-sickness absence.

From mobilisation to pilot completion, Back in Action have been flexible in their approach to working with Bakkavor and have helped us effectively manage MSDs in the workplace. Back in Action are proactive in collating and analysing data and have demonstrated significant ROI for Bakkavor whilst delivering multiple intangible benefits for our employees.

The Pilot

We were commissioned to conduct a 6-month onsite physiotherapy pilot at Holbeach to focus on reducing absenteeism and facilitating a smooth RTW for absent employees as data gathered before the pilot demonstrated an average length of absence from work of 44.7 days per employee.

From the 77 employees referred into the onsite pilot physiotherapy service, data collected demonstrated these employees returned to work on average within just 17.6 days of their assessment and required just 1.7 treatment sessions to facilitate a return to work.

The pilot saved 682 MSK-related sick days in a 6-month period, demonstrating an 8-fold return on investment (ROI) for Bakkavor and a reduction in MSK-related sickness absence at the Holbeach site of 72%.

The service was well received by Bakkavor staff

  • 100% of service users reported the service met their needs and shortened their period of incapacity,
  • 88.2% of all employees accessing the service advised it helped them to return to work quicker.

Data collated identified 2 ‘at risk’ groups of employees working in both the bakery and assembly departments where Back in Action were able to recommend proactive and preventative strategies to address the MSK-related risks these directorates faced.

Back in Action also created bespoke content aimed at empowering employees in manual roles to self-manage their lower back symptoms, which featured in Bakkavor’s “Just Made” company magazine and received exceptional feedback from management and staff.
