Rehab in Motion: Physio Empowers Dancer’s Recovery

Learn how targeted physiotherapy enabled a dance student to keep studying and take confident steps towards returning to competitive dance.

A 19‑year‑old university student and competitive dancer was referred to our physiotherapy service following an acute onset of lower back pain. The hyperextension injury occurred while dancing and had a significant impact on the patient’s day‑to‑day function. They reported difficulty with bending and lifting, prolonged sitting (particularly for studying), sleeping, and were unable to dance or attend the gym. The patient also had important dance competitions scheduled over the coming months, which added to their concern about recovery and timing. Being unable to train or rehearse was causing understandable anxiety, particularly alongside the demands of university study.

The patient called to book their first appointment and was seen promptly three days later at one on clinics in York. Early access to care allowed for a timely assessment and helped to prevent further deterioration, with the location and accessibility of the clinic particularly important as it allowed the patient to balance treatment around their academic commitments.

At the initial appointment, our physiotherapist carried out a thorough assessment, with specific attention to ruling out any serious pathology. Red flags were checked and have continued to be reviewed at each follow‑up session. Clear explanations were provided, alongside reassurance and advice, which helped reduce anxiety and improve confidence in movement. Hands‑on treatment at the first session led to immediate improvements in symptoms and movement. This had a noticeable positive effect on the patient’s confidence and outlook. A tailored exercise programme was introduced and continues to be progressed, with a focus on supporting recovery while working towards a safe return to activity.

The patient has been rebooked on a weekly basis, maintaining continuity with the same physiotherapist throughout. This has allowed consistent messaging, close monitoring of progress, and timely adjustment of treatment. Continuity has been particularly valuable in supporting the patient to remain engaged and optimistic about recovery.

This case demonstrates the value of patient‑centred, high‑quality physiotherapy care delivered. Timely access, clear communication, and effective hands‑on treatment have supported both physical recovery and confidence, helping the patient manage their symptoms, continue with their studies, and work towards returning to competitive dance.
