Introduction

On paper it might seem like the two professions are identical, the terminology is alike, and the two terms are often used interchangeably. It can be even more confusing if you’re not sure which one you need to see. But the two are quite different in their approach so we’ve put together a guide of both professions so you can make sure you pick the right option for you and your personal journey.

What do they both do?

A Chiropractor will focus mainly on pain relief, specifically pain found in the back, neck, and head as well as some joints. They use gentle manipulations to promote the body to heal-itself. Chiropractors primarily use their hands or a small instrument to apply a controlled, sudden force to the area. In contrast to this, a Physiotherapist focuses on improving your ability to move and function without pain and specialise mostly in rehabilitation. They may use their hands; show you exercises or sometimes use ultrasound or shockwave treatment to treat the injured area.

What are the key differences?

The key differences between the two professions are mainly in the methods. A physiotherapist will generally work with you longer term and provide a comprehensive exercise plan whereas a Chiropractor will perform spinal manipulation and perform chiropractic adjustments that focus on immediate pain relief. While both professions hold degrees and further study, ‘Physiotherapist’ is a legally protected title, which simply means you can only use this title if you are registered with the HCPC (Health and Care Professions Council).

  • Provide chiropractic adjustments of areas of the body such as spinal manipulation to decrease pain and promote self-healing.

What are the similarities?

Physiotherapists and Chiropractors do share some qualities and they have similar goals in mind for their patients.

  • Both focus on managing pain using non-invasive methods.
  • Both can be used to treat some of the same conditions.

Which One is Right for Me?

The best treatment for you will depend on the type of injury you have, while both professions treat musculoskeletal conditions and joint issues, one may be better suited towards certain injuries that the other.

If you’re not 100% sure which one is right for you, it’s worth having a chat with your GP. If you are having joint pain or you’re finding it hard to move around easily, talking to your doctor can help to see if either option could work for you. Remember to always have an assessment before starting any treatment plans.
