What is Shockwave Therapy?

Shockwave Therapy is a non-surgical and non-invasive treatment to help reduce pain symptoms. Your Physiotherapist will use a specialist device that sends shockwaves through the skin to the injured tissue, the shockwaves create tiny cavitation bubbles in the tissue which then burst and stimulate blood flow, stem cell activity and pain reducing enzymes in the treated area.

Benefits of Shockwave Therapy

The main benefits of Shockwave Therapy are pain reduction and restoration of movement. Many patients see an immediate improvement and with continued treatment, they are now living pain free. There are also no side effects of shockwave therapy

Precautions

While Shockwave Therapy is non-invasive and generally a pain-free treatment option, there are some things to be aware of. Even if there is no pain we recommend that if you do have this treatment, refrain from intensive activities that stress the treated area for the next 48 hours after each treatment. We advise not to use ice or anti-inflammatory medicines after shockwave therapy as these will be counterproductive to the treatment, which encourages the bodies own natural healing process.

Shockwave Therapy is not suitable for:

  • Application over open growth plates – not suitable for under 18 years
