How to Stick to Your Treatment Plan

Okay, you’ve had your first appointment and one of our physiotherapists have given you a series of exercises to do every day to be pain free. But are you finding it difficult to motivate yourself and stick to your treatment plan? Physiotherapy can potentially be hard work and the journey may seem challenging. Sticking to your treatment plan, even if you don’t want to, is essential to your recovery.

It is important to remain patient, everyone progresses at different speeds and important to fight the frustration and not give up. We put together a few tips to help you stick to your treatment plan.

Make Sure You Fully Understand Your Plan

Having a good understanding of each exercise you’ve been given and the benefits that go along with them will give you a huge boost. It’s important to ask your physiotherapist lots of questions to make sure that you know how to complete the exercises, knowledge is power, and you will feel much more confident going into the exercises at home.

Plan Our Your Day

Although treatment can vary greatly, a typical programme involves some movements or exercises to strengthen the affected area at least once a day. You are much more likely to stick with your treatment plan if you plan your day to include time for the exercises. If you’re more of an evening person you can factor that in, if you have a busy schedule, set aside 5 minutes during a lunch break to complete the exercises. Whatever your schedule, there is always 5-10 minutes space somewhere.

Tell Friends and Family the Plan

Communicating with your friends and family about the plan can be beneficial. If they know how often you’re supposed to be completing your exercises, they can motivate you to stick to it, some may even join in and complete the exercises with you!

Setting Attainable Goals

Setting a goal is an important part of the process and something you can measure your progress against. But it’s important to pick a goal that is within your means, realistic short-term goals can help you stay focused and committed, especially if you feel like you’re not making any progress. Remember that everyone’s journey is different, and everyone will progress at different rates.

Be Patient

Potentially the most difficult step, it’s easy to compare yourself to other people and wonder why your progress may be different. Remember, it’s a marathon, not a sprint. There may be times when progress is slow, however it doesn’t mean your plan is not working. Stick to it and you’ll be sure to see signs if improvement, no matter how small. Progress will look different to each individual.
